About Us

Since opening our doors in 1989, Killerney Farm has been under the same ownership and management. Our family owned business has worked hard to develop our business  through a real passion for teaching and a dedication for horse care.

A Brief History:

The history of Killerney Farm began with a couple who met in Ontario – Colin Crone (known as Irish) who was competing and training alongside members of the Canadian Equestrian Team (Jim Day, Tommy Gayford, Jim Elder) at venues such as The Royal Winter Fair, and Madison Square Gardens in jumping competitions and Erika Steinborn who rode at a local stable and concentrated on the flat work and education of the horse.  Soon married and had one child they turned their love of horses into a lifelong career. They operated a training and boarding stable in Edmonton and then in Ontario in the early 1970’s.  Competing regularly in the Edmonton Saddle Club Shows at that time.

Shortly after, they settled in Ireland where they operated a sales and training stable with buyers coming from Germany and the Middle East.  Buyers represented clients such as the Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, would often arrive in the sales yard with a horse transport. In Ireland, they were regular competitors at the Balmoral Horse Shows, Strokestown and the world famous Royal Dublin Society Horse Show, with horses in both the hunter and jumper rings.  Upon moving to Canada, they kept that dream alive and operated two stables prior to settling here at Killerney Farms.  All the while dedicating themselves, once more, for the advancement of horse and rider.

Tradition has continued in the family, daughter Kathleen Schirmaier (nee Crone)  following many successful years of showing in Ireland and Alberta now does some coaching for Killerney Farm and also manages the horse shows.  Granddaughter Deanna Schirmaier is presently training in Calgary under the tutelage of horseman Frank Selinger and competing on the A Circuit with her Thoroughbred gelding Speed Zone at the 1.20m level at locations such as Spruce Meadows Masters and RMSJ in Calgary with hopes to be hitting USA circuit in 2017. She is also riding young and upcoming horses destined for the hunter and jumper rings.  Deanna spent several years riding with CET Team Member, Two Time Olympic Team Member, International Grand Prix Rider Lisa Carlsen as well as with Dayton Gorsline, International Rider, CET Team member and much more. Deanna most recently had the privilege to ride with the renowned George Morris.
